This frame is not meant to compete with the painting, and that is precisely where its strength lies. The narrow moulding is veneered with maple and glazed in an ivory colour. Between shades of cream and light beige, a subtle wood grain remains visible, making the light-coloured profile appear warmer than a plain white. The matt finish absorbs harsh reflections and responds to daylight with subtle shifts in tone. Measuring 20 mm in width and 20 mm in height, the strip forms an almost square, linear profile. The front is flat, the outer edge is clearly defined, whilst the inner rebate accommodates the print and glass. There is no groove, no bead and no ornament to draw the eye to the frame. This functional design is reminiscent of the minimalist gallery mountings of the Modernist and post-war periods, when prints, photography and non-representational painting were deliberately presented without historicising ornamentation. We particularly recommend it for contemporary works featuring open areas of colour or delicate prints on warm white paper. Even a understated still life can breathe beautifully within it. The frame comes into its own most effectively when the artwork needs space and does not call for decorative embellishment. It supports rather than overwhelms. That may sound obvious, but it is surprisingly rare.
