The Ernie picture frame demonstrates just how much character can be conveyed by a simple frame. Its clean-lined profile, 20 mm wide and 20 mm high, is constructed from light-coloured wood and finished with wenge veneer. The distinctive grain runs cleanly across the visible surfaces and meets precisely at the mitre joints. This ensures the corner joints remain clearly visible without disrupting the calm overall impression. The angular rectangular profile features a flat front and straight outer edges. On the reverse side, facing the picture, there is a rebate designed to hold the glass, the picture and the backing board. This understated profile design follows in the tradition of modern 20th-century gallery and art frames: it is intended to frame the artwork, give it a defined outline and remain visually unobtrusive. We particularly like the untreated, matt surface. Dark brown and reddish-brown patches alternate along the rich wenge grain. As there is no glossy finish, light is absorbed softly whilst the fine pores and lines remain visible. We are happy to recommend Ernie for graphic prints or minimalist architectural photography. It looks at its best when clear surfaces or warm earth tones complement its dark wood grain.
