Painting Frames "Agathe" |

| Agathe is a frame that embodies a palpable tension between austerity and an inherent restlessness. The 71-millimetre-wide moulding is made of solid wood and finished with a dark olive wood veneer. Its natural grain remains clearly visible, as do fine cracks and irregular lines. Dark brown and black-brown sections alternate, whilst the light moves only subtly across the surface. The result is not smooth perfection, but a rustic, almost archaic presence. The 31-millimetre-high profile is constructed as a wide, largely flat panel. It rises gently towards the outer edge, whilst a narrow, black-edged step leads towards the picture opening. This dark inner edge focuses the gaze and clearly separates the motif from the undulating veneer. The shape is reminiscent of panel frames, such as those used particularly in 17th-century Dutch painting for portraits, still lifes and interiors. There, the wide dark surface was intended to visually unify the picture and deepen the colour accents. We are happy to recommend Agathe for a tranquil portrait or a dark still life. However, we find the contrast with a typographic poster or a graphic work in signal red particularly appealing. It looks at its best when the subject has something to offer that contrasts with the bold frame. |
