Victor Hugo was a great writer who also painted. There are more than 2500 of his works - most of which are kept in Paris. For his paintings he used materials like charcoal, pencil, pen and ink. With these he created small abstract works, but also nature scenes and buildings can be guessed on paper. Hugo not only painted his motifs in nature, he also drew them very impressively imaginatively from memory. His handwriting is clearly recognizable by the way he uses black. To achieve certain effects, he used different techniques, which he even combined with each other.
The painter and writer had always been politically active in his actions, which is why he had to flee Paris. So he was also against the death penalty by treating the subject in his paintings. After all, there was a reason why he did so - in his childhood he had seen an execution. In exile on Guernsey he developed his drawing skills further. Here he also found many motifs that inspired him to use unconventional methods.
He enjoyed painting and creating collages and drawings and experimentation anyway. So he did not only use the brush, he wiped with his fingers and developed blotches further. Hugo did not engage in artistic activities to present his works in large exhibitions. He preferred to see himself as a writer rather than a painter, because he simply enjoyed his work. For this reason he did not exhibit any of his own paintings. Hugo was undoubtedly a pioneer of his art, which is why the artist Max Ernst was later inspired by his works. However, the chosen motifs from nature as well as nocturnal scenes again fit to Hugo's literary work. Well-known works by Victor Hugo are called: Breakwaters in Jersey, ruins in a landscape and landscape with three trees.
