The Russian painter Vasili Gigorevitsch Perov (other spelling: Wassili Grigorjewitsch Perow) loved to devote himself to rural scenes, children and ordinary people in his works. His paintings radiate enormous vitality, the figures seem to be moving in front of the viewer's eyes. Some scenes are cheerful, but most are dark and depressing. Perov's pictures tell in great detail about the social inequality in Russia of his time. He outlined emotional insights into bitter poverty and the harassment of child labor that was common at the time. Perov experienced firsthand what exclusion means. As the extramarital son of a noble public prosecutor, he was not allowed to bear his father's name, despite the later marriage of his parents. Instead, he was named after his godfather. The name Perov comes from the Russian word for feather and is a nickname that his calligraphy teacher gave him and which he kept as an artist name throughout his life.

Perov is one of the academic painters of his generation. Although he was only temporarily enrolled at the Alexander Stupins Art School in Arsamas, he later studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. At that time he already received numerous awards for his paintings. Perov has become known for his scenes of everyday life, some of which were created during a scholarship abroad in Germany. On a trip to Paris, he painted street musicians, traders and ordinary people. Despite the wealth of inspiration, Perov didn't feel comfortable in the French capital. The plight of the Paris population was great, and the most necessary was lacking. The decayed customs and the lack of morality also affected him. And so he wrote to the academy after two years and asked to be allowed to come home early. He justified his request by saying that he was unable to create a single picture that could satisfy him. Diplomatically, he attributed this to his lack of knowledge of the Parisian mentality and customs, which is why he preferred to concentrate again on the urban and rural life of his home country Russia, which he did. In addition to everyday scenes, he will focus more on portrait painting and religious and biblical motifs in the following years.

After returning to Moscow, Perov was promoted to the status of a scientist and was appointed professor shortly thereafter. Andrei Petrovich Ryabushkin is considered his best-known student. In addition to Grigori Grigorjewitsch Mjassojedow, Iwan Nikolajewitsch Kramskoi and Nikolai Nikolajewitsch Ge, Perov was one of the founders of the so-called Peredwischniki, an artistic society that came into being as a response to a confrontation between the realists and representatives of the avant-garde and which organized numerous traveling exhibitions until 1923. The aim of the group was to denounce the absolutist rule in Russia by portraying the real life reality of the population. Perov died of tuberculosis in Moscow at the age of 49 in 1882. © Meisterdrucke
