The life of Richard Caton Woodville junior, born in 1856, had been quite exciting from an early age. His father had died before he was even born and so the most important people in his young life were his sister and his mother. She was the daughter of a Düsseldorf architect and moved with her two children from London to St. Petersburg. From there the path of the small family continued to Düsseldorf. There Richard Caton Woodville junior studied painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, following in the footsteps of his father and mother.
His teachers included Wilhelm Camphausen and Eduard Gebhardt. Between 1875 and 1881 Richard Caton Woodville had to go into hiding. The reason was an arrest warrant against him for trespassing. The painter went to Paris and continued his studies here. His most important reference person became the history painter Jean Leon Gerome. Later the artist went back to London and made a name for himself primarily as a painter of military and war paintings. His experiences, which he had gained on a trip through Albania and Montenegro in 1877, were particularly helpful in this respect. At that time the Russian-Turkish War was raging there.
In 1882 he also became an eyewitness of war in Egypt. One of his major works is the Charge of the Light Brigade. There, Woodville recreates a scene from the Battle of Balaklava in the Crimean War of 1854.
