Philip Richard Morris' works are versatile and beautiful. Whether with engraving, lithography, oil or watercolor, the artist showed great talent and created a world of lighting and restraint, peaceful scenes in the middle of flower meadows, wild landscapes by the sea and always religious motifs. His strong influence on William Holman Hunt is particularly reflected in the numerous pictures about saints and biblical representations. But he also loved the simple country life and his pictures of sea coasts, meadows and forests impress with their warmth and peacefulness.

But Philip Richard Morris was actually supposed to take a completely different path. He was born in Davenport in 1836, the son of an English iron foundry, and was also to be trained in the craft of iron casting. Morris discovered his passion for painting and drawing early on, but saw no way to prevail against his father's will. It was only when William Holman Hunt, a friend of the family, convinced the father of his son's talent that Morris was allowed to attend art classes at the British Museum's evening school before being admitted to the Royal Academy School in 1855. With his picture "The Good Samaritan" Morris won a travel grant through his school and was able to go on extensive trips to Italy and France, where he finally stayed for ten years. In France he found inspiration for many of his works, which were increasingly popular due to their warmth and attention to detail.

Even though Morris was not one of the best-known artists of his time at the time, his paintings sold well in England and his religious paintings in particular were very popular. After his return to London, things began to calm down around him. He had to struggle with health problems and no longer painted as many pictures as before or at least no longer exhibited them in public. He was employed as a teacher at the renowned Royal Academy of Arts in 1877 and married his wife Catherine in 1878, with whom he had five children. Family and work life seemed to require a lot of time and strength and not much is known about his creative time in his later phase of life. Philip Richard Morris retired in 1900 and died in London a little later in 1902. © Meisterdrucke
