"Art is a means of communication between souls". Paul Sérusier was born in Paris, an artistic city. After studying philosophy, Paul devoted himself to art. He enrolled at the Académie Julien. The contents of his teaching moved away from classical conservative art. On a study trip to Pont-Avon the young artist met Paul Gauguin. Under his influence, Sérusier created his most significant work. The depiction of a landscape with a forest, a path, a mill and a row of beech trees on the bank completes the path to abstract painting. Back in Paris, Sérusier founded the artists' group "Nabis" (Hebrew for prophet) under the impression of what he had experienced. The group's talisman becomes the landscape painted by Paul Sérusier in Pont-Avon. The work is given the title Le Talisman.
Paul Sérusier uses strong colours and flattened forms in his works, his thoughts flow onto the canvas. Influenced by the Arts and Craft movement in England, the interplay between art and decoration plays an important role for the artist. Sérusier uses three points in his paintings. The actual appearance of his environment, the sensation it evokes in him and the form in which he depicts what he sees. With strong lines and light colours he reinforces the two-dimensionality of his paintings. The painting Farmhouse in le Pouldu is a typical landscape interpretation by Paul Sérusier.
