Otto Marseus van Schrieck

    1614   -   1678
Baroque   •   Wikipedia: Otto Marseus van Schrieck

Otto Marseus van Schrieck, an exceptional talent from the Dutch Golden Age, left behind a remarkable collection of paintings that capture the magic and beauty of forest flora and fauna. Born in Nijmegen around 1613, he embarked on the last journey of his life in Amsterdam on 22 June 1678. In his works, which are now reproduced in excellent quality as art prints, he is a master at bringing the nuances of the natural world closer to the viewer.rnbr/br/rnThe journey that shaped him into the painter he was took Marseus van Schrieck to various parts of the world. Between 1652 and 1657, he took the opportunity to study in Rome and Florence under the celebrated painters a href"/artists/Matthias-Withoos.html" class"main_link_std"Matthias Withoosa and a href"/artists/Willem-van-Aelst.html" class"main_link_std"Willem van Aelsta. During this time, he joined the Dutch Artists' Guild. His artistic ambitions later took him to the court of the Grand Duke of Tuscany and on trips to England and France. After these journeys, he settled in Amsterdam. He found happiness in his marriage to Margarita Gysels, the daughter of the engraver Cornelius Gysels, on 25 April 1664. According to a biography by a href"/artists/Arnold-Houbraken.html" class"main_link_std"Arnold Houbrakena, Marseus van Schrieck was nicknamed "Snuff" or "Fretter" by the Bentvueghels in Rome. This nickname was probably due to his habit of always looking for details in his garden. In fact, his interest in the natural world was so pronounced that he kept snakes and lizards in a shed behind his house and on a fenced-in property outside the city.rnbr/br/rnIn his work, Marseus van Schrieck showed a particular fondness for dark studies of plants, often complemented by lizards on the ground and insects on the leaves and branches. The uniqueness of his work influenced a variety of artists, including Willem van Aelst, a href"/artists/Anthonie-van-Borssom.html" class"main_link_std"Anthonie van Borssoma, a href"/artists/Elias-van-den-Broeck.html" class"main_link_std"Elias van den Broecka, J. Falk, a href"/artist/Carl-Wilhelm-de-Hamilton.html" class"main_link_std"Carl Wilhelm de Hamiltona, a href"/artist/Trajan-Hughes.html" class"main_link_std"Trajan Hughesa, a href"/artist/Nicolaes-Lachtropius.html" class"main_link_std"Nicolaes Lachtropiusa, a href"/artist/Jacob-Marrel.html" class"main_link_std"Jacob Marrela, a href"/artist/Abraham-Mignon.html" class"main_link_std"Abraham Mignona, a href"/artist/Rachel-Ruysch.html" class"main_link_std"Rachel Ruyscha, a href"/artists/Christiaen-Striep.html" class"main_link_std"Christiaen Striepa, a href"/artists/Isac-Vromans.html" class"main_link_std"Isac Vromansa, Matthias Withoos and a href"/artist/Pieter-Withoos.html" class"main_link_std"Pieter Withoosa. A remarkable collaboration took place with a href"/artist/Alida-Withoos.html" class"main_link_std"Alida Withoosa, the daughter and sister of the latter two. They worked together on paintings of the Vijverhof garden, which became part of Agnes Block's collection of garden albums. Marseus van Schrieck's work exudes a rare appreciation and devotion to the natural world, and his intricate studies of forest flora and fauna are a gift to any viewer. Available today as fine art prints of the highest quality, his artwork carries on his legacy and immerses viewers in the magic of his delicate brushstrokes.
