In the wintry Dordrecht of 1698, precisely on December 25, the world welcomed the talented Jacobus Houbraken. The scion of renowned artist and biographer Arnold Houbraken, Jacobus was destined to add his own unique touch to the rich canvas of art history. Under the loving tutelage of his father, he learned the craft of engraving before spreading his wings and moving to Amsterdam in 1707. Here he helped his father create his art historical masterpiece, "The Great Theater of Dutch Painters." Jacobus' influence on art was not limited to helping his father. After his father's death, Jacobus devoted himself to an ambitious project that made him an important portraitist of his time. He sketched and engraved the likenesses of Dutch celebrities, many of which are now considered the only extant representations of them. His techniques were meticulous and refined, influenced by the works of masters such as Cornelis Cort, Jonas Suyderhoef, Gérard Edelinck and the Visschers.
Houbraken specialized almost exclusively in portraiture and created works of lasting value. In collaboration with the historian Thomas Birch and the artist George Vertue, he created the remarkable project "Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain". His artistic journey also led him to a productive collaboration with historian Jan Wagenaar on the extensive "Vaderlandsche historie". Through his passionate dedication and craftsmanship, Jacobus Houbraken achieved an extraordinary number of over 400 portrait engravings.
