In many law offices they hang on the wall: framed caricatures of almost unsympathetic to grotesque, but also terrifyingly timeless and realistic-looking people in legal robes. These ingeniously unmistakable, ingeniously accurate drawings of the professional group "Les gens de justice" created one of the outstanding masters of political caricature, Honoré Daumier, who died in Marseilles in 1808 in Marseille and in Valdemois in northern France in 1879, alongside thousands of other drawings. Hardly any other contemporary, like Daumier, impaled French political developments and social ills in the mid-19th century with a sharp-caustic pen.

Glasersohn Daumier came from family conditions in which poverty was a permanent condition. The young Daumier had to work hard as a child. Luckily, his extraordinary talent for drawing was discovered and promoted. Daumier, who was also gifted as a lithographer and sculptor, was fortunate enough to have a relatively safe living from 1831 onwards, thanks to his position as a caricaturist in the Parisian satirical book "La Caricature" or in his follow-up magazine "Le Charivari". Famous colleagues of Daumier in these papers were among others Jean Ignace Gérard, called "Grandville", and Charles -Joseph Traviès. Daumier's drawn-up archetypes, such as the bourgeois bourgeois Robert Macaire, pointed to the establishment's constant ineptitude for the hollowness, greed, and misanthropy of the elite and bourgeois layers of elites and their sycophants in the petty bourgeoisie. A political-economic layer that, despite the fall of the kingdom in 1848, the then short-term Second Republic (1848-1852), the Empire of Napoleon III. (1852 - 1870) and the third republic established thereafter essentially remained dominant. Daumier's caustic criticism of the rulers and the stupidity brought him more than once in conflict with the law. His famous caricature of King Louis Philippe, who as a glutton ("Gargantua") devours his people, led in 1832 even to a prison sentence.

Daumier's black and white drawings, wood engravings and lithographs are characterized by clear light-shadow contrasts. Less well known than his cartoons, Daumiers are committed to Barbizon's realistic school of 300 paintings such as "The Laundress" (1863) as well as his sculptures like the figure "Ratapoil" (1851). Daumier was well connected in the cultural avant-garde of his time. His friends and admirers included George Sand and Louis Cabat. © Meisterdrucke
