Frederick Richard Lee

    June 10, 1798   -   June 5, 1879
Nonclassified artists   •   Wikipedia: Frederick Richard Lee

The English artist Frederick Richard Lee created a large number of oil paintings, which still attract great interest today. When he was 19 years old, he began his studies at the Royal Academy. Already in 1838 he was accepted as a full member of the Royal Academy thanks to his impressive artistic work. He was an extremely prolific artist who brought a large number of works to canvas during his creative period. His style was inspired by renowned artists of his time, including the English landscape painter John Constable. He created some well-known works in collaboration with other artists. For example, Lee painted landscape pictures to which his colleagues Thomas Sidney Cooper and Sir Edwin Landseer added further elements such as animals. Scottish landscapes were the main source of inspiration for his work. But he also collected impressions while traveling, which he processed in his works of art. His detailed landscape paintings convince with bright colors and a pleasant light atmosphere. Constable's strong influence on Frederick Richard Lees works is clearly visible. It should be emphasized that Lee has maintained his own style despite the upheavals of his time. Impressionistic elements are sought in vain in his paintings.

Today it is not known exactly how many works he actually painted. For almost 90 works his authorship was clearly confirmed. 50 of them are in public possession of various cultural institutions and museums in Great Britain. Frederick Richard Lee's works can be admired in the Tate Gallery, the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Penrhyn Castle and the Royal Academy. Research shows that art experts assume that there is a much larger number of works of art that Lee is said to have painted during his lifetime. There are said to be more than 300 paintings in total, some of which are in private ownership. Lee's works were already in great demand during his lifetime. With the income from his artistic activity he was able to achieve a stable prosperity. It is possible that this is precisely why he concentrated on popular and sought-after picture motifs. He spent his free time on his estate in England and in South Africa, where some of his family members lived. He had a great passion for the sea and liked to travel by yacht. With great pleasure he travelled the coasts of Italy, France and Spain. After his death in 1879 the artist was buried in South Africa.
