Italian painter Francesco Solimena has achieved a lot in his 90 years of life. Artistically, as the formative painter of the Neapolitan baroque, he has firmly established himself in art history. Many experts even call Francesco Solimena one of the greatest European painters of his era. Solimena was also a master of self-expression. He sought contact with big names and patrons who recognized his talent and awarded him numerous orders.

His clients included the French King Louis XIV, who was famous for his generosity as "Roi-Soleil" and "Sun King". Through him, the pictures of Francesco Solimena found their way to the huge Palace of Versailles. Eugen Franz, the famous prince of Savoy-Carignan, who rose to become the most important general of the Habsburg monarchy, also ordered numerous pictures from Solimena. In the last years of his life, the very old artist was often a guest of Charles III, who at the time was king of Naples and Sicily and later became king of Spain. All clients loved Solimena's special painting style, which used the exuberance of Neapolitan Baroque as a perfect means of expression. He mastered the art of creating a special light and shadow effect in his pictures, which became typical of his entire work. Almost all of the pictures were taken in his studio in the city of Naples, which he seldom left. However, his pictures traveled all over Europe. They hung not only in Versailles, but also in Vienna's Belvedere Palace and adorned the walls of numerous noble palaces in the German principalities. As an artist, he was not only attracted to the canvas, he furnished countless church rooms with artistic frescoes and also distinguished himself as an architect with the facade of the Church of San Nicola alla Carità in Naples.

His talent and diligence made Francesco Solimena a rich man who lived in a splendid palazzo in Via San Potito in Naples. He designed the representative building himself and equipped it himself. But Solimena not only thought of herself, but was very committed to the training of young painters. He himself painted his first pictures in his father Angelo's studio and enjoyed a privileged starting position for his career there. The academy he founded established itself as a center of artistic life in Naples. The institute's reputation extended far beyond Naples and many European art students found their way to the rich and fascinating city on the Mediterranean. Some of his students later became famous painters themselves. Sebastiano Conca and Francesco De Mura in particular reinterpreted the spirit of their great teacher and created great images at the transition from the Baroque to Classicism. © Meisterdrucke
