London, 1811: Edward William Cooke was born in the Pentonville district. A world that could offer him so much, in which he could let himself and his longing run wild. His father, George Cooke , was a well-known line engraver and the forerunner of his passion, which was practically born of him as well as by his uncle, William Bernard Cooke , also a line engraver. Growing up in an environment of artists, he discovered his love of drawing and the art of engraving at an early age and perfected his passion accordingly over the years. His concomitant preference for marine motifs (mainly sailing ships) eventually led him to publish his "Shipping and Crafting", a series of consummate engravings, at the age of 18. In addition, he benefited from the advice and experience of Clarkson Stanfield and David Roberts , two employees in his father's company. However, it was not until 1833 that he started painting in oil. Already at this time he was essentially shaped by realism.
This style emerged in the mid-19th century and contains two special features: on the one hand, the factual depiction of people or scenarios and, on the other hand, the associated social or political statement. Edward William Cooke toured in this regard, the domestic and foreign, including the Netherlands in 1837 because of his love for the Dutch marine artists. He was particularly attracted to the Isle of Wight, where he studied carefully fishing boats and lobster pots, as well as breakwaters and small wooden walkways.

For the next 23 years he traveled a lot, but always returned home. During this time, one of his most successful works, the "Beaching a Pink in heavy weather at Scheveningen", which he exhibited in 1855 at the Royal Academy. His further travels took him to Spain, Venice, North Africa and Scandinavia. But not only the painting was of interest to Cookes, but also the natural science. In the gardener James Bateman he found a good friend and adviser, whom he helped design and decorate the gardens of Biddulph Grange in Staffordshire in the 1840s. His special love was the rhododendrons and orchids.

In 1858 he was elected to the National Academy of Design as a honorary academician. Edward William Cooke died on January 4, 1880 at the age of 68 years. © Meisterdrucke
