Edward Burne-Jones

    August 28, 1833   -   June 17, 1898

Edward Burne-Jones experienced his childhood in industrial Birmingham and began his artistic career while still at school. He decided to study theology. Here he met the later designer William Morris, both became friends and broke off their studies together. They devoted themselves to art and worked together as partners. In the circle of the Pre-Raphaelites Burne-Jones found his spiritual home and became one of the most important representatives of the artists' association.

But Edward Burne-Jones wanted more than just the reproduction of a motif, art should enter the life and the living space. He was not only an artist but also a craftsman and with this approach he is regarded as the founder of arts and crafts. In contrast to the grey environment of industry, he created a world of fairy tales, sagas and legends. Based on literary models, he created stained glass windows, ceramic plates, furniture and tapestries. Together with his companion Morris, he is considered the founder of modern design.

His Sleeping Beauty interpretation of the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty, as well as depictions of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table are detailed.

The figure of Venus reflected in the water in Mirror of Venus shows the penchant the designer developed for mythological themes.
