Artists in the Spotlight: Nadar
Portrait von Nadar Gaspard-Felix Tournachon aka Nadar was one of the first portrait photographers. His journey began in Lyon, France, where he dropped out of medicine to pursue journalism. He moved back to his birthplace in Paris in 1839. At first he could not decide his job. He tried his hand at drawing, at the theater and in industry, until in 1849 he created the satirical magazine "La Revue Comique", in which he directed himself with various artists against the Paris Commune by means of illustrations. Among the artists was his half-brother Adrien alias Nadar jeune, who previously went through the relationships of Nadar in the training of the painter Picot. At the age of 34, he married the 16 years younger Ernestine. In the same year he devoted himself to photography. His focus was on the psychological coverage of his models. "In order to create an intimate image and not just a banal portrait, the result of a sheer coincidence, you have to delve into the model, you have to grasp your thoughts and even your character," says Nadar, to explain his way of working. To do this, Nadar talked for hours, sometimes until the model took a more informal attitude. That was not easy at the time because the model had to stay in front of the lens for a few seconds. Among other things, he also used accessories that helped to calm the model but were invisible in the picture. His clientele consisted in particular of prominent writers, with whom he was partly friends. Nadar took the first aerial photos at the Battle of Solferino. For this purpose, he constructed a screw airship, which inspired Jules Verne to his novel "Five weeks in the balloon". Four years later, Nadar traveled with his wife in the airship from Paris to Hanover, but crashed, so that both he and his wife had to hospital with serious injuries. Nevertheless, he loved aviation so much that in the same year he became president of the newly founded Société d'encouragement de la navigation aérienne au moyen du plus lourd que l'air, which promoted the construction of flying machines. He finally gained fame through his long exposures in the Parisian catacombs. His only son Paul followed in his father's footsteps and took over the studio after his death.
