In the picturesque streets of Siena, a heart of Tuscany, once lingered Duccio di Buoninsegna. His brushstrokes, fine and thoughtful, left an artistic imprint of inestimable value on the artistic landscape of the Middle Ages. His work in the late 13th and early 14th centuries decisively shaped the character of Sienese Gothic and paved the way for the emerging style of the Trecento.
The mysterious aura surrounding Duccio's life adds luster to his artistic legacy. Siena was his cradle as well as the stage for his outstanding works of art, which can now be found in many sacred and government buildings throughout Italy. However, this artist's daily life was not always one of pure glory. Documents reveal debts and fines, evidence of a turbulent existence that not infrequently overshadowed his artistic genius. Rumors of seven children and family estrangements after his death surfaced in the archives, but painted a multifaceted picture of the man behind the masterpieces.
Despite the sporadic obscurity that obscured his name in Sienese records, there was speculation that Duccio did not just linger in the climes of Tuscany. His artistic footsteps may have taken him to Paris, Assisi, and even majestic Rome. Yet it was in his hometown of Siena that he rose to become one of the most celebrated and innovative painters of his time.
