Pointillism

Dot beside dot, pure pigments, no mixing on the palette: Pointillism left the merging of the tones to sight itself, which from a few steps' distance builds surface out of points. The foundation was supplied by the colour theory of the chemist Michel Eugène Chevreul, who had described in 1839, in his treatise on simultaneous contrast, how neighbouring colours strengthen one another in the impression. Painting became applied optics here, and exactly so it was meant by its inventors.

Georges Seurat introduced the procedure in 1886 at the last Impressionist exhibition with his picture A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, a monumentally calm riverside scene more than three metres wide that hangs today in the Art Institute of Chicago. When he died in 1891 at only 31, Paul Signac became the systematiser of the movement; his treatise of 1899 placed the new manner of painting in the colour tradition of the painter Delacroix, and his harbour pictures of Saint-Tropez reconciled method and sensuousness.

The dot method travelled fast. Henri-Edmond Cross translated the Mediterranean light into luminous mosaics, Théo van Rysselberghe carried the procedure into the Brussels avant-garde around the group Les Vingt. Maximilien Luce applied it to factories and suburbs, and in the Alps Giovanni Segantini developed his own, threadlike variant of the divided application of paint. No other manner of painting of the time was so much method, and for that reason it could be learned, taught and carried on.
