Late Renaissance

The late Renaissance (1520 to 1600) is also called Mannerism. Characteristic of this art movement is the departure from the ideal of harmony and balance that still dominated the High Renaissance. The artists no longer focused on fidelity to reality, perfection and exactness, but now gave free rein to their love of experimentation. Increasingly, art and technique themselves are discussed and questioned. Themes are the style, the method, the way, the "maniera". Florence is the center of the Mannerist late Renaissance, which is reflected in architecture and the visual arts as well as in literature and music.

The best example of a Mannerist building is the Palazzo del Te in Mantua, designed by Giulio Romano. Romano does not break all the rules of Renaissance architecture here, but he does break some of them, insofar as, for example, he deliberately uses irregular spacing and avoids symmetry in the facades. In sculpture, the human body is depicted twisted and tortuous. The figura serpentinata (serpentine) is typical of the late Renaissance and Giovanni Bologna's "Rape of the Sabine Women" is a prime example. Painting experiments with light and colour. In addition, symmetry and proportionality are abandoned here more radically than in the other art movements. The depicted persons often appear "mannered". Important Mannerist painters were Parmigianino, Jacopo da Pontormo and his student Agnolo Bronzino as well as El Greco.
