A garden landscape in oils can hang today beside a digitally reworked photograph, an animal portrait beside abstract fields of colour. Contemporary art, after all, names no style but a belonging to the present. It embraces the work of living or only recently deceased artists and shifts with every generation. The understanding of this art has been shaped above all by the great exhibiting institutions, first among them the Venice Biennale, founded in 1895, and documenta, held in Kassel since 1955. Neither shows a school; each presents a cross-section of what its own present holds to be significant.

What stands out is the multiplication of means. Many artists move between canvas, camera and screen instead of committing to one medium. At the same time figurative painting has never ceased, carrying landscape, still life and animal subjects forward in dialogue with older traditions of the genres. Alongside photography and digital works, painting forms the main emphasis here, with extensive groups of works by Lincoln Seligman and Mark Adlington among others. What the painters gathered here share is less a programme than the circumstance that they continue old genres with today's eyes.
