Art of the 19th century

No century before saw painting change direction so often as the nineteenth, and none produced so many pictures. The academies lost their monopoly, art societies, galleries and world's fairs created new stages, and reproductive engraving carried paintings as prints into middle-class homes. Whoever painted, painted for a market that was only just coming into being.

This page gathers painters who stand between the great labels of the century. Carl Friedrich Lessing was among the shaping forces of the Düsseldorf school of painting, whose history and landscape pictures set an example internationally. John Frederick Kensett painted the coasts of New England in still, clear light; this painting was later called Luminist, and Hubert Sattler presented precisely painted distant views from Cairo to New York with his cosmoramas, picture journeys for a public without a railway ticket.

To this comes the graphic arts as the bread-and-butter art of the century. Joseph Wolf, who came from the Eifel, became in London the most sought-after animal draughtsman of his time and worked for the Zoological Society, Joseph Nash spread with lithographs of old English manor houses the image of a good old time. All these paths belong to the same story: a century that first had to invent its own public.
