Ancient Art

Of the painting of antiquity on wood and canvas almost nothing survives. What we know we owe to durable supports such as fired clay, wall plaster and stone mosaic, and to rare strokes of luck in transmission. All the more revealing is Greek vase painting: on it the pictorial narrative of antiquity has been preserved, from gods and heroes to banquets and sport. At first black figures stood on the red clay ground; around 530 BC Athenian workshops reversed the procedure and let the figures stand red against the darkened ground, which allowed finer detail within the figures.

Rome's painting we know above all through a catastrophe. The eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79 buried Pompeii and Herculaneum and preserved entire walls with garden illusions, mythological scenes and feigned architecture. To these come floor mosaics from villas and baths. From Roman Egypt come the mummy portraits of the Fayum oasis: faces of the deceased, mostly painted in wax colours on wooden panels in the first centuries AD, preserved thanks to the desert climate.

This collection orders by what survives, by vases, wall painting and mosaic, rather than by individual masters, for scarcely any names have come down from these centuries. Greek and Roman works form the core, painted and carved alike, flanked by older and neighbouring cultures, from the tomb paintings of pharaonic Egypt to the burial chambers of the Etruscans at Tarquinia north of Rome. The Renaissance found its teachers in these holdings, as did Classicism.
