The Great Wave off Kanagawa is considered one of the world's most famous works of Japanese art. It is a color woodcut by the Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai and belongs to the series "36 Views of Mount Fuji" in which he represented the landscapes around the Fuji. The great wave seems to want to devour the fishermen, who are helplessly at the mercy of the stormy sea. The image has an impressive dynamic that emphasizes the contrast between the transience of human life and the imposing nature. The shape of the line between sky and sea shows the symbol of yin and yang, reflecting the contrast between the bright, the heavenly, and the dark, earthly forces. The number of originals probably amounts to a few hundred. These are more than 180 years old and show differences in color: the color of the sky varies from yellow to pink and on some prints the clouds are not visible. Because of the different colors and the wear of the wood blocks, no pressure is the same.
