Rembrandt van Rijn is not only one of the most important, he was also one of the most prolific artists of his time. In one, art historians agree: Of the numerous paintings, etchings and drawings that the Dutchman has created, "The Night Watch" is his great masterpiece. The monumental oil painting with the original title "Captain's Company Frans Banning Cocq and Lieutenant Willem van Ruytenburgh ready for the march" was completed by the Master of the Baroque in 1642. It shows a group of 34 people, out of the guild captain Frans Banning Cocq and Lieutenant Willem van Ruytenburgh stand out. Remarkable is the painting in so far as Rembrandt breaks the conventions of portraiture. He does not show the figures standing still and not posing for the artist. Rather, he holds a dynamic movement. The persons are in the "departure for the march". Once again, Rembrandt proves to be a consummate master of light-and-shadow painting with "The Night Watch". © Meisterdrucke
