Most people to whom this painting would be presented without any prior knowledge would answer the question, "What do you see?" As a matter of course: "Jesus." This resemblance to God was certainly intended by Durer, since he was representative of the Artist as per se wanted to portray the part of God's creation closest to God in his most important capacity: both God and the artist are creatively active. Furthermore, Dürer holds out his hand to the observer, ie the part of his self that is indispensable for his work, as if to say: "See what God gave to his creature, so that he himself can become the creator." Next to this allegory is Dürer's clothes the portrait, which he was not able to do as an artisan without a guild and from a low position, is another open provocation. © Meisterdrucke
