The assassination of the Roman statesman Gaius Julius Caesar by several members of the Senate is one of the most famous and formative events of antiquity. The violent act, which could not stop the development of Rome from a republic to an empire, has also influenced art. Jean Leon Gerome's painting The death of Caesar does not show the murder itself, it captures the mood afterwards. The corpse of the statesman lies, face down, in the left foreground of the picture. In the background, brightly lit, the murderers cheerfully leave the Senate. Triumphantly, they wave their knives over their heads. The composition causes the viewer to pay attention to the successful conspirators, not the dead man left behind. The artwork reflects the scenery down to the last detail. Statues and ornate pillars give the room grandeur. The magnificent chair Caesars is overturned. Mosaics adorn the floor. Through the open entrance can be seen citizens of the city and another building with its columns. Only a single senator still sits in his place, looking like a forgotten relic of what was before Caesar's assassination. Jean Leon Gerome has incorporated his personal impressions of art and architecture in Rome into his painting with a keen sense for the scenery.
