Francisco de Goya was a Spanish painter and graphic artist and lived from 1746 to 1828. He worked as a court painter, but later he turned his "Caprichos" more political issues and questioned social ills or the war with his works critically. The painting "Witches Sabbath" was created between 1797 and 1798. Here you can see a sitting goat in the center of the picture, surrounded by a group of women. Some of them are holding small children, a dead child is lying on the ground, one is skeletonized. The scene is disturbing and that is probably the purpose of the picture. The coloring also contributes to this eerie impression. Since the early modern era, the Witches' Sabbath has been a well-known motif for European artists, fueling the observer's fear of the devil and his helpers, who had to be on guard. © Meisterdrucke
