Abstract shapes

241 Discovered works of art
Abstract forms - this includes the purposeful composition of geometric shapes, but also of colors, lines and contrasts, which does not serve the objective representation. Unlike object-oriented art, which prevailed until the beginning of the 20th century, abstract art is about deliberately avoiding any association with known forms, objects, or living things.

The Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky is one of the most important representatives and co-founder of abstract painting. Around the year 1910, this new art form emerged and quickly spread to various independent currents in Europe. In addition to Kandinsky, the most important contemporary artists include the Dutch artist Piet Mondrian, the Frenchman Robert Delaunay and the Hungarian László Moholy-Nagy. Also the German artist Paul Klee, who was friends with Kandinsky, created numerous works of art, which are assigned to this category.

Then as now, abstract painting was a subject of much controversy even among artists and art historians. A widespread position was that only those works could be considered as art that required a certain ability, a creative or craft talent. In 1957, paintings were exhibited in an art exhibition in London painted by a monkey. The fact that the man-painted works were indistinguishable from those of the monkey triggered heated discussions. And yet abstract forms have their own special charm. They are free for interpretation and thereby create unique associations with the viewer. Not least, the artworks speak for the time in which they were created. The need to tell new stories, to express themselves anew, was clearly shaped by modernity, but also by the world wars and the post-war period. At about the same time, the similarly scandalous atonal music of Arnold Schönberg was created.
